Invisalign is a game-changing orthodontic treatment that straightens teeth over the course of a few months using a series of clear, removable aligners.
These aligners – or trays, as they are sometimes referred to – are designed to shift teeth in the desired directions by applying pressure to the surface of each tooth individually. By the end of the schedule, teeth will be perfectly uniform. All movements, however small they may be, are carefully considered by our orthodontists to make sure that the programme remains manageable for the patient, yet still delivers the incredible results they are looking for. The aligners themselves are made from a robust medical grade plastic that has been approved for use within the body.
It’s a tried-and-tested system that has helped millions of happy patients worldwide improve their smiles for good – and it’s a particularly appealing option for teenagers and adults who would prefer a more discreet and flexible option when compared to traditional metal braces.
The Invisalign process involves several key stages, which we’ll outline below so you know exactly what to expect.
After carrying out an initial assessment of your teeth using innovative 3D imaging software (which is much more accurate and comfortable than taking traditional impressions!), your orthodontist will ask you a series of questions to determine whether you’re a suitable candidate for Invisalign. They will want to gather information on your medical and dental history and discuss any issues that might need treating before you can start your teeth straightening treatment. They will also talk you through your desired outcomes, and what’s going to happen in each treatment phase.
You should leave this consultation feeling completely at ease with the process, and equipped with all the knowledge you need to start your Invisalign journey with confidence!
The images taken during your first scan will be used to create a precise digital model of your mouth, which will then be used to inform your treatment plan. In laymen’s terms, our orthodontists will work out how your teeth will need to be moved, and the amount of pressure each aligner will need to apply to each tooth to get you one step closer towards your goal.
We will then get to work creating your custom-designed aligners, and you’ll be given a start date.
Once you receive your course of aligners, work can begin!
You should aim to wear your trays for approximately 20-22 hours a day. You will usually need to wear each tray for 1-2 weeks before moving on to the next one.
Your orthodontist will advise whether you need attachments (small button-like bumps), which are placed on the teeth to guide movement more effectively. Don’t worry – they are very inobtrusive. Depending on your case, you may also need to wear elastics for some or all of your treatment.
You might find it takes you a little while to adjust to your new routine; you’ll need to remove your aligners every time you eat and drink anything other than water, and you’ll also need to allow enough time after meals to thoroughly brush and floss your teeth. Inadequate cleaning will lead to a build up of plaque and debris in the teeth and gums, which will be made worse by the fact it will be held in place by the trays for most of the day. So, keeping on top of your oral hygiene during Invisalign is extremely important.
Some people find that wearing their aligners gives them a slight lisp, but this usually subsides after a few days as you get used to the feeling of the trays in your mouth. Similarly, you should expect to feel a little discomfort each time you transition to a new tray – but this just means the aligners are doing their job and moving your teeth in the desired direction! Over-the-counter painkillers can be used to take the edge off any soreness, and cold compresses can help to tackle jaw pain and headaches. Orthodontic wax can also be used to prevent gum irritation. Do speak to your orthodontist if you have any concerns or the pain does not dissipate after a few days.
Now that dream smile is finally in sight, we know you’ll want to finish your course of trays as quickly as possible. Remember, however, that each aligner must be worn in order. Even if you think you’re ready to move to the next stage, you can’t skip trays unless you have been instructed to do so by your orthodontist, otherwise you run the risk of damaging your teeth and compromising your treatment. Don’t be tempted to eat, drink or smoke with your trays in, either, as you are likely to stain or damage them!
Our team will keep a close eye on you throughout your Invisalign plan. You will be invited to come back into the practice every couple of months so we can re-scan your mouth and check everything is progressing as it should. We can also advise on how best to clean your aligners, as this will be vital to keeping your mouth healthy.
In some cases, we might recommend some refinements after you have completed your initial course of trays. These refinements will tidy up any inconsistencies and make doubly sure that your teeth are in optimal alignment. Though receiving more trays can be frustrating when you feel like you’re so close to the finish line, we promise that all your extra hard work will be worth it in the end!
Once the process is complete and you are over the moon with your new look, you’ll be given top and bottom retainers. These are a little thicker than standard trays, as they are designed for long term use.
You will need to wear both retainers for 10-12 hours per day (usually overnight) to keep your teeth in place and make sure they don’t revert back to their old positions. As with your weekly trays, you’ll need to keep them clean, and store them carefully in a case when they’re not in use so they don’t get damaged.
Your orthodontist will also want to see you for regular check-ups in the year or so after your Invisalign treatment has taken place. And if you have any questions or worries at any time, you are always welcome to contact our friendly staff.
Most patients complete their course of Invisalign trays within 12 to 18 months, but some treatment plans will be shorter or longer, depending on the complexity of the case. As long as you follow your orthodontist’s instructions and settle into a good routine, you should finish your plan in the timeframe provided by our team – but remember, you might need some refinements at the end of the course to fine-tune your results.
